Good to Know Before You book Lhasa tour package from Nepal

Visiting Lhasa requires special permits that are different from a regular visa. Here is everything you need to know, written clearly.

What Documents Do Nepali Travellers Need for Lhasa?

Visiting Lhasa requires two important documents a China Group Visa and a Tibet Travel Permit. Both are different from a regular Chinese tourist visa. Here is how it works:

  1. China Group Visa:  Nepali travellers entering Tibet from Nepal need a China Group Visa a special type of Chinese visa specifically for entering Tibet from Nepal. It must be applied for at the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu and requires a minimum of 4 people applying together. Guru Travels will connect you with other travellers if needed. Processing takes 4 to 5 working days.
  2. Tibet Travel Permit (TTB Permit):  In addition to the Group Visa, all visitors to Tibet need a Tibet Travel Permit issued by the Tibet Tourism Bureau. This permit can only be obtained through a licensed travel agency which Guru Travels will arrange for you. Your guide will carry the original permit and present it at checkpoints. The permit takes approximately 15 to 20 days to process.

How Do You Travel from Nepal to Lhasa?

The easiest and most popular way is the direct flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa Gongkar International Airport. This flight takes only about 1 hour and 20 minutes making Lhasa one of the closest international destinations for Nepali travelers. There are currently four direct flights per week. Alternatively, you can travel overland via the Gyirong border crossing, though this takes 15 to 20 hours and is weather-dependent.

Tip:  The direct Kathmandu to Lhasa flight is stunning. On a clear day, you can see the entire Himalayan range including Mount Everest from the window. Sit on the right side of the plane for the best views.

What About Altitude — Will I Get Altitude Sickness in Lhasa tour package from Nepal?

Lhasa sits at 3,656 meters above sea level this is high, and altitude sickness is a real concern for first-time visitors. Symptoms can include headache, dizziness, tiredness, and shortness of breath. This is why Day 1 of the tour is dedicated entirely to rest and acclimatization no sightseeing, no rushing. Your body needs time to adjust.

Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol for the first two days, move slowly, and do not overexert yourself. Many travelers take Diamox (acetazolamide) tablets to help with acclimatization consult your doctor before the trip. Most people feel significantly better after 24 to 48 hours.

  • April to June and September to October are the best months to visit Lhasa. The weather is clear, mild, and pleasant ideal for sightseeing at high-altitude sites. The skies are brilliantly blue, visibility is excellent, and the monasteries and temples are at their most atmospheric.

Avoid July and August this is the Tibetan rainy season. Rain, mud, and low visibility can affect both sightseeing and overland travel. November to March is cold and dry temperatures can drop well below zero at night. Experienced travellers enjoy Lhasa in winter for the quiet and the dramatic snow-dusted landscapes, but it requires good cold-weather preparation.

What Money Should You Use in Lhasa?
