Guide

The Paanch Pokhari Trek (Five Sacred Lakes) is one of Nepal’s most beautiful off-beat journeys — a perfect combination of spirituality, tranquility, and Himalayan adventure. Located in Sindhupalchok district, about 100 km northeast of Kathmandu, this trek offers mesmerizing mountain views, untouched nature, and a deep sense of peace.

“Paanch Pokhari” literally means five ponds — a cluster of five pristine alpine lakes nestled at an altitude of 4,100 meters. These lakes are considered holy by both Hindus and Buddhists, who gather every year during the Janai Purnima festival to offer prayers. Surrounded by the majestic peaks of Jugal Himal, Dorje Lakpa, and Langtang Range, the lakes reflect the purity of the Himalayas and the divine stillness of the human spirit.

Guru Travels Ltd. invites you to join this scenic and soulful trek — a journey where every step connects you closer to nature, culture, and inner calm.

Detail Itinerary

Your journey to the sacred Paanch Pokhari Trek begins with your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, where a representative from Guru Travels Ltd. warmly welcomes you. After a comfortable transfer to your hotel, you’ll receive a short trek briefing, equipment check, and introduction to your guide. The evening is free to stroll around Thamel or visit Maitidevi, where our office is located. Enjoy a welcome Nepali dinner with cultural music to set the tone for the adventure ahead.

After breakfast, you embark on a scenic drive along the Araniko Highway passing Bhaktapur, Dhulikhel, and Panchkhal. The highway follows the lush valley, revealing terraced hills and distant mountain views. Lunch en route at a local teahouse in Dhulikhel offers a taste of rural Nepal. By late afternoon, you reach Chautara, the district headquarters of Sindhupalchowk and the trek’s starting point. Settle into a local lodge, meet your porters, and enjoy dinner while taking in panoramic hill views.

Your trekking adventure begins! The trail ascends gradually through subtropical forests and terraced farmlands. You’ll pass Tamang settlements, friendly locals, and children waving along the path. The route to Sano Okhreni rewards you with views of the Melamchi valley below and the snow-clad ridges of Jugal Himal in the distance. Lunch is served midway in a forest clearing, and by evening you reach your teahouse. The crisp mountain air and simple hospitality mark the perfect start to the trek.

Today’s trek climbs higher through oak and rhododendron forests. As altitude increases, the landscape shifts to alpine vegetation. You’ll visit Narsing Gumba, an old monastery perched above the village. Here, Buddhist prayer flags flutter in the wind and monks chant peacefully. This is a perfect place for meditation or photography. Overnight at a teahouse near the monastery, where you’ll enjoy a hearty mountain meal and a mesmerizing sunset over the Sindhupalchowk hills.

The trail becomes steeper as you move toward the alpine zone. Walking through mossy forests, you’ll begin to sense the spiritual aura of the mountains. Small stupas and mani walls mark sacred spots. Lunch at a pasture site offers splendid views of Dorje Lakpa and Gaurishankar ranges. By afternoon, you reach Paanch Pokhari Base Camp, your campsite surrounded by snow-capped peaks. The evening is peaceful, with the sky painted in shades of orange and purple as the sun dips behind the Himalayas.

This is the most rewarding day of your journey. Early morning, hike uphill to witness the five sacred lakes collectively known as Paanch Pokhari, meaning Five Lakes. The turquoise waters reflect the mountains and the open sky — a sight believed to cleanse one’s soul. You’ll have ample time to explore, take photographs, or join a brief puja ritual. After lunch by the lakeside, descend carefully to the base camp for an overnight stay under the stars, cherishing the serenity of this divine landscape.

After breakfast, retrace your steps downhill to Bhotang Village, passing yak pastures and pine woods. The descent offers a different perspective of the valley and local life. At Bhotang, your vehicle awaits to take you back to Kathmandu. Enjoy a scenic drive along the Indrawati and Melamchi rivers. By evening, you arrive in the capital, where Guru Travels Ltd. hosts a farewell dinner celebrating your successful trek to Paanch Pokhari.

Depending on your flight schedule, enjoy a leisurely morning or join an optional Kathmandu Heritage Tour to visit UNESCO sites such as Pashupatinath, Boudhanath, or Patan Durbar Square. Our representative will assist with airport transfers. Depart Nepal with lasting memories of the Five Lakes Trekking Adventure, knowing that your spiritual and scenic journey with Guru Travels Ltd. connected you deeply with the Himalayas and the heart of Nepal.
